Are you an organized and prepared baker? Yes? Well congratulations! I would love to be but it never works out that way. I am a “HEY I AM CRAVING SOME COOKIES/CUPCAKES/Who-cares-as-long-as-it’s-sweet” kind of person so I bake with little notice or preparation . That spontaneity always leads to a problem. The Butter. The butter is never soft and letting it sit on the counter for hours isn’t an option when a sweet treat is waiting for me! Back in my younger days, I would turn on the stove and hold the butter over it with a pair of tongs to soften it. DON’T DO THAT. It’s messy and dangerous and you end up with a melted mess 😅 Let’s explore some much safer and more effective ways to get your butter baking ready! (And not burn down the house!)
Option 1- The butter-cup
For this you will need a small plate and a glass cup. Turn your sink water on as hot as it will go and set the cup under it. Let the water run into it while you thinly slice the butter and put it on the plate. This method works best with a stick or less of butter. Any more than that will prevent it from softening. Turn off the water, shake the water out of the cup and quickly place it upside down over the butter. Let sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, run more hot water in the cup, shake out and let sit on the butter for another 5 minutes. Now get baking!

Option 2- The microwave
NO you are NOT going to microwave the butter.
Fill a glass measuring cup with 3 cups of warm water. Put it in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes. While the water is heating up, slice your butter and lay it on a plate or in a bowl. Do not over crowd the dish or it will not soften evenly. Once the microwave is done CAREFULLY use a pot holder to remove the cup of water and quickly place the butter in and close the door. Let it sit in the warm microwave for 10 minutes.
Option 3- The Melting Pot
This is my favorite method. Just like in option 2, you are going to fill up a measuring cup with 3 cups of warm water. Microwave it for 2 minutes. While it is heating, slice the butter and put it in a bowl that will fit on top of your measuring cup. (I like these measuring cups and these prep bowls.) Basically we are creating a “double melter” instead of double boiler 😎 Once the water is done in the microwave, use a pot holder to carefully remove it. Set your bowl of butter on top of the measuring cup. Keep a close eye on it and give it a stir every once in a while. It is very easy for your butter to melt this way so pay attention! After 5 minutes your butter should be good to go!
Obviously, planning ahead and letting your butter sit out at room temperature to soften is the best way to do it but some of us are not that functional.
